Martina Groß

Martina Groß is Associate Professor at the Institute for Media, Theatre and Popular Culture at the University of Hildesheim. She studied Romance literatures and languages, comparative literature, theatre, film and media studies in Paris, Nantes and Frankfurt am Main, where she completed a doctorate at Goethe University Frankfurt. There, she worked as a research assistant at the Institutes of Romance Literatures and Languages and of Theatre, Film and Media Studies and co-directed the MA programmes in Dramaturgy and Erasmus Mundus in Performing Arts Studies. She has held guest professorships and teaching appointments at LMU Munich (interim professor of theatre studies), Lancaster University and the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg. She was also a fellow at the German Historical Institute in Paris. She serves as an associate member of the DFG Research Training Group 2477 “Aesthetic Practice” (University of Hildesheim) and co-convenor of the working group “Theory and Practice” of the German Society for Theatre Studies (GTW).

Martinas research is situated at the intersection of theatre studies, cultural studies and literature studies, with a particular emphasis on theatre and literary historiography, transnational theatre and transcultural knowledge transfer, translation in the context of philosophy, multilingualism and the politics of representation as well as comic and popular theatre forms from the early modern period to the present. Her publications include: Querelle, Begräbnis, Wiederkehr. Alain-René Lesage, der Markt und das Theater (Universitätsverlag Winter 2016); ‘Itinérances allemandes de Molière: l’exemple de la Berühmte Bande des Velten’ (Littératures classiques, Nr. 106, 3/2021) and ‘A French Hotel in Lima, Russia in Paris, and Theatre Laws in Transylvania: On Migration, Travel, and Transnational Female Theatre Historiography.’ (European Theatre Migrants in the Age of Empire. eds.
