PuppetPlays (ERC-GA 835193)
Reappraising Western European Repertoires for Puppet and Marionette Theatres

Winner of the ERC Advanced Grant call for 2018, PuppetPlays is a research project funded by the European Union through the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 and led by Didier Plassard, full-professor in Drama Studies at the Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3.

The main goals of PuppetPlays are:

  • collecting a corpus of representative plays from Western Europe (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland) between the 17th and the 21th Century;
  • identifying the characteristics of puppet dramaturgy and their variations depending on eras, cultural spheres, producing conditions and targeted audiences;
  • re-evaluating the contribution of these repertoires to the construction of a European cultural identity.

PuppetPlays has the ambition to:

  • contribute to the development of tools and methods for the Digital Humanities through the development of an online platform with a database, an anthology of texts, as well as several documentary and pedagogical resources for researchers, artists, teachers, students, and public at large ;
  • enhance research on the very little known topic of playwriting for puppetry with the production of a conclusive monography by Didier Plassard and the organisation of two international conferences;
  • stimulate and support young researchers in this area awarding two doctoral and 5 years of postdoctoral scolarships.

Access to all published results and all resources of PuppetPlays will be open and free.

Reappraising Western European Repertoires for Puppet and Marionette Theatres

  • rassembler un corpus représentatif de pièces pour marionnettes d’Europe de l’Ouest (Allemagne, Autriche, Belgique, Espagne, France, Grande-Bretagne, Italie, Pays-Bas, Portugal, Suisse), du 17e au 21e siècle ;
  • identifier les caractéristiques d’une écriture théâtrale pour marionnettes et leurs variations selon les époques, les aires culturelles, les conditions de production et les publics visés ;
  • mettre en lumière l’apport de ces répertoires à la construction d’une identité culturelle européenne.

PuppetPlays a l’ambition de :

  • contribuer au développement des outils et des méthodes des humanités numériques en développant une plateforme Internet comportant une base de données, une anthologie de textes et de nombreuses ressources documentaires ou pédagogiques destinées aux chercheurs, aux artistes, aux enseignants, aux étudiants et au grand public;
  • enrichir la recherche sur le domaine très peu connu des écritures pour marionnettes par la production d’un ouvrage de synthèse par Didier Plassard et l’organisation de deux colloques internationaux ;
  • stimuler et accompagner les jeunes chercheurs dans ce domaine en attribuant deux bourses de thèse et plusieurs bourses de post-doctorat.

Toutes les publications et toutes les ressources de PuppetPlays seront d’accès libre et gratuit.
