Collective Creation in Theatre – Beyond Borders and Frontiers

Open session with Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini

The Open Session, chaired by Daniele Vianello (50 mins) will be an opportunity for both audience and workshop participants to familiarise themselves with the work of the two guest artists leading the following day’s Master class. The Session will also be opened up to discuss and compare theories and practice, the “stage” and the “scholarly”, also with reference to those subjects which have informed Daria Deflorian’s and Antonio Tagliarini’s artistic process (otherness, diversity, migrations, multi-inter-trans-cultures as resources for imagining and creating alternative theatre aesthetics).

26 October 2018

The body, words and ‘writing’

Master class on play writing

by Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini

The Master class is from 10h00 to 14h00 and will focus on aspects relating to actor dramaturgy, and writing from the stage which can only be actually ‘set down’, ready for publication, after a long process.

Participants: 20

If you  wish to participate, please send an email giving the reasons of your wish as well as a short biography. The deadline is October 18. An answer will be given  October 22 at the latest. Mail address: eastap.conferenceinparis@gmail.com

Registration is reserved to EASTAP members. You are welcomed to join.

A call to performers, writers, directors, researchers and scholars interested in  ‘devised theatre (or ‘collective creation’: a form of collaborative, actor-led improvisational play-writing). This Masterclass will combine theory and practice, exploring different creative methods which have inspired works including: Rewind, omaggio a Café Müllerdi Pina Bausch (‘Homage to Café Müller by Pina Bausch’- 2008), Reality (2012), Ce ne andiamo per non darvi altre preoccupazioni (‘We’re leaving so you don’t have to worry anymore’-  2013, Winner Ubu Award for Best Writing 2014) from the publication Trilogia dell’invisibile(‘Trilogy of the Invisible’ -Titivillus editions 2015) Il cielo non è un fondale (‘The Sky is not a Backdrop’ – 2016, published by Cuepress in 2017) and the most recent Quasi niente (‘Almost Nothing’ – 2018).  This open approach does not aim for the rigidity intrinsic in ‘methods’ and consequently has been able to evolve into a ‘language’ between the two artists over the past ten years of working together, acknowledged by both audiences and critics alike, in Italy and abroad.

Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini will illustrate their actual creative process by discussing some scenes and – thanks to their working journals – reviewing the original material in-depth. At the same time participants will be able to experience first hand the guiding thread, typical of collective creation, that connects the action, text and writing for theatre. To end the Masterclass, Daniele Vianello will introduce and coordinate a last set of exchanges and reflections with Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini.

Dramaturgies of Post-Democracy in Rimini Protokoll’s State 1-4

In their most recent production, the tetralogy State 1-4 (2016-18), Rimini Protokoll focus on post-democratic phenomena such as the global network of intelligence, construction sites and lobbyism, the digitalisation of democracy and the interweaving structures of global companies and politics. For each of these political subjects, they construct not only the special setting of an aesthetic space, but also a unique way of addressing, organising and guiding the audience through the theatre event. In this way, different strategies of participation and interaction generate an immersive experience.

This Masterclass will discuss different dramaturgies for staging the audience and try to relate this to different notions of the concept of post-democracy like those of Rancière, Crouch, Blühdorn and others.

Furthermore, the Masterclass will discuss the production aspects of this unique tetralogy, since four theatres teamed up with an exhibition institution, questioning the pros and cons of such a mega production. Finally, the session will position these productions in the wider oeuvre of Rimini Protokoll and its well-known shows that have travelled across Europe.

And – of course –  the Masterclass will provide an excellent opportunity to examine (and discuss) video documentation of the performances, excerpts of the working protocols and scripts, and images of research trips. There will also be time for questions.

Imanuel Schipper

Imanuel Schipper is a lecturer and researcher at a number of universities and art academies in Germany and Switzerland. He also works as a dramaturg for the well-known German Performance group, Rimini Protokoll, with whom, over many years, he has developed a contemporary genre of documentary theatre as intervention, as political think tank. Most recently, he has been the dramaturg for State 1-4, a tetralogy on post-democratic phenomena, commissioned by Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and four major theatres in Germany and Switzerland.

Imanuel Schipper works at the intersection between scientific research, teaching, and artistic practice. He strives to take terms deriving from Theatre Studies such as “theatricality“, “performativity“, “dramaturgy“, “staging“,  “reception“ and “mediality“, beyond the boundaries of the theatre, for example into design, urban design, scenography and curation.

He holds an associate professorship in Performance Studies and Dramaturgy at the Department of Arts & Social Change at the Hamburg Medical School (MSH), is on the board of directors for, Performance Studies international (PSi), and is finishing his PhD on „Relational Dramaturges” at Leuphana University Lüneburg.

Recent Publication: – Rimini Protokoll: Staat 1-4 (2018).

-Performing the Digital – Performativity and Performance Studies in Digital Cultures (2016).

Observatoire critique / Critical Observatory
(Erica Magris)

Appel à participation – Date limite : 25 septembre 2018

Call for participation – Deadline : 25 september 2018

erica.magris@univ-paris8.fr

The “Critical Observatory” is a collaborative space, first created during the Corps en scène: L’Acteur face aux écrans (Bodies on Stage: The Actor Facing the Screen) conference (Université Paris 3, June 2015). Conceived as a platform for non-hierarchical exchange and sharing, the “Observatory” experiments with a variety of languages and digital communication and archival tools, to reflect directly and critically on ideas proposed by speakers during the conference. In 2015, fourteen Theatre Studies students and early-career researchers from a number of Paris universities and from further afield, followed the conference’s different sessions and, rendered an account of the event’s complexity and variety by writing texts, taking photos, conducting interviews and making videos and drawings, which they then published live and direct using different online digital interfaces and social networking sites,. They subsequently wrote a collective article on this experience which was published in the journal Aparté1.

On the occasion of EASTAP’s first conference, Decentring European Visions: The Emergence of New Forms, to be held at the Cité Internationale in Paris from 25 to 27 October 2018, we hope to reconstitute the “Observatory”, and invite young researchers and students at Masters level and above. The group will decide collectively on the tools to be used and the modes by which members will respond to the conference programme. In particular, we shall endeavour to develop the multilingualism of our international contributors and to prioritise international exchange at the heart of the collective group in order to develop further the conference’s main themes, namely  artistic migration and European identity.

Two preliminary meetings with Josette Féral (Université de Paris 3), the conference organiser, and Erica Magris (Université de Paris 8), responsible for the “Observatory”, will take place on 28 September and 12 October (10:00 to 12:00) at the Université de Paris 8 (room to be confirmed). On 24 October the “Observatory” will take over its premises and put in place its general modes of practice.

Please send your application – a brief email explaining your motivations for contributing to the “Observatory” and your CV – to Erica Magris, Département de Théâtre, Université Paris 8 (erica.magris@univ-paris8.fr). Deadline 25 September.

For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Erica. You can also see the “Observatoire”’s publication: V. Cuevas, G. Filacanapa, G. Girot, E. Magris, E. Mascarau, R. Scalari, « Une expérience de plateforme critique collaborative : l’Observatoire Critique du colloque Corps en scène », in Aparté | arts vivants, n° 4, 2017, pp. 113-119.

We are looking forward to meeting you!

26 Octobre

14:30 – 16:30

Lieu : Auditorium de la maison franco-britannique

Pour en savoir plus

CORPUS VIVANT : Protocole performatif

27 Octobre

18:00 – 19:00

Lieu : Coupole

Pour en savoir plus

https://mesencyclopedistes.github.io/metaslam/

A meta-slam is a poetic performance, written and then performed in situ, within the context – and notably within the confines – of a professional or academic event: a congress, conference, lecture, seminar or debate. Neither scholarly poetry nor comical interlude, the meta-slam considers itself to be an authentic contribution towards enlightening a given situation, putting it into perspective, or subverting it.

A meta-slam is a poetic performance, written and then performed in situ, within the context – and notably within the confines – of a professional or academic event: a congress, conference, lecture, seminar or debate. The meta-slam is composed live and direct, as the event unfurls, in response to material that is listened to, observed and re-worked; it is nourished by what is said either by the speaker, or in the auditorium. It is written over the course of the day, as an exercise in listening, gleaning, selecting, juxtaposing, montage and linking. It then enables not only snatches of speech from conference speakers, authors, artists, or works that have been mentioned, to resonate, but also things said by the audience, quotations, echoes, homophones, ironic asides, portmanteau terms and other plays on words. The meta-slam also welcomes digressions, Freudian slips and typos (such as those caused by the playful little mouse that came to distract the Méta 3 at the LLA-Créatis seminar).

By definition, the meta-slam is oral, situated, ephemeral, and rapidly becomes dated. It is, inevitably, imperfect. It claims to be nothing more than a product of its own circumstances. But it is a collective product in that it is a collage of scattered snatches of speech uttered by anyone and everyone, which are subjectively and partially (in both senses of the word) pieced together by the meta-slammer, whose patchworking holds no obligation to rigour, reference or deference. By virtue of its primary sources, the meta-slam is a collective work, whose collaborative nature earns it its legitimacy, and a sympathetic ear for the part of its audience. The meta-slam shares characteristics with conventional slam in that it is open-mike, but it differs in its format in two distinct ways: the succession of speakers that contribute; and also their incomplete, casual, bric-a-brac presentation. The meta-slam represents a humble, yet possibly irreverent quintessence, of the plurality of legitimate, authorised, official voices, but also inconsequential, derivative or parasitic noises, that are heard over the course of the day.

The meta-slam combines the ability to be reactive, with candour, irony and empathy; it looks with an external and sensitive eye at the totality of things that are heard and moments that are lived, and then draws together an impromotu and offbeat poetico-oratory synthesis, a poetic echo which is more subjective, but which is always in tune with the event and with its sense. It offers itself as an alternative to genres habitual at a conference, to academic registers, business speak, PowerPoint. It represents imperfection, subjectivity, and assumes the responsibility for anti-conformism. The meta-slam tackles seriousness head-on. It relaxes postures of authority and scholarly rigidity. It welcomes in a poetic, humoristic and playful tone. It is undisciplined.

It also invites self-critique. It introduces a distance that is both watchful and stimulating, when it comes to the kinds of frames of reference, standards, predictabilities, clichés and habits that often dictate what is said in conferences, but also watches its own use of idiom, culture and poetry. The posture and ethos adopted by the meta-slam authorise a freedom of tone, ruptures in register, the burlesque, non-sequiturs, impertinence, thinking the unthinkable, exposing epistemological blind spots, saying what’s never said, putting your foot in it…

The meta-slam is also determined by the moment, by newspaper headlines, news trivia, what’s happening on a particular day. It attempts to draw lins between what’s happening in the outside world, social problems, the arena (or bubble) of university life, which is not always inclined to lend an ear, or to act as an echo chamber for the world.

The effect of the meta-slam resides in the introduction of a poetic displacement, which both creates a distance or dislocation – “meta”; and simultaneously remains synchronised with the situation it represents, in order to poeticise itt. The meta-slam is a situationist operation. In brief, its virtue, its use, its value as an exploratory and learning tool, reside in serendipity, which is the ability to make unexpected discoveries and to seize their use.

For example, in the context of the international conference « L’éducation au développement durable de l’école au campus », from 25 to 27 June 2008 in Albi, France, I created two meta-slams entitled « Le développement du râble de lapin » ; this mode of intervention was called a « bata-slam », based on the model of the Bata-Clons that performed in parallel with the particularly incisive and invigorating clowning sessions that took place during the conference. I then showed a « Modeste contribution à un manifeste pour une culture pirate de l’ère » in a professional, rather than university context, during the Assises de la culture en Pays Sud-Toulousain, on the 18 June 2014 in Rieux-Volvestre ; then « Le rhizome de la situation » and « Le paradigme de l’ornithorynque » during the Méta 3 and 4 seminars run by the LLA-Créatis research group. In 2015, I also invited the UnDeuxGround collective (Lee Harvey Asphalte and SanDenKR) to do the same during the international Performances poétiques conference in Albi. Given the subject matter of this particular conference, our approach was particularly productive, and created a kind of vertiginous and infinite mise en abyme. The collective volume Performances poétiques, to which the conference gave rise, which was published with Editions nouvelles Cécile Defaut in 2017, provides a space for these meta-slams, which are alternated with articles written by the conference participants.

Neither scholarly poetry nor comical interlude, the meta-slam considers itself to be an authentic contribution towards enlightening a given situation, putting it into perspective, or subverting it. In this respect, the meta-slam is a serious matter.

Jérôme Cabot, who was a student at the École Normale Supérieure rue d’Ulm, is a lecturer in French literature at the Institut National Universitaire Champollion in Albi, where he is also responsible for cultural activities and for the undergraduate degree in « Développement culturel des territoires ruraux ». After a period of initial research into novelistic style, polyphony and reported speech (notably in the works of Albert Cohen), he turned his attention to practice-research, in the area of poetic orality and “undiscipline”, with the LLA-Créatis research group in Toulouse. He organised the international conference « Performances poétiques » (Albi, March 2015) and has edited a volume of essays of the same name, published in 2017 by Editions Nouvelles Cécile Defaut. He was very involved in the Toulouse slam scene from 2002 to 2006, and now regularly runs open mikes, master classes and writing workshops. Notably, he is in charge of the artistic direction of a group of student poets at the INU Champollion, alias Jeff Champo, which has published an annual special issue since 2006. Poet and performer, under the name of Jikabo, he is also an author and actor who works closely with the guitarist Bruno Izarn, as part of the pneuma zeugma rock’n’roll poetry duo Double Hapax, which, since 2010, has performed around 100 concerts and produced three albums : Oxymore ou vif (2011), Cabaret étrange (2014), Anamnèse (2017). He is also on the editorial committed for the jornal, Saxifrage.
